Wasabi brought the works to Dots Friday!

I knew it was gona be fun hun what w/Doreen's surprise birthday bash and Gary Moore guesting along with other performers.

I high tailed it up to Dots early 'cause I was too excited to clock watch anymore at my digs. Da feet were itching to hit the hard wood after a busy real life "When is this week gona end?" 5 days.

The band was still setting up as Willow chatted a bit with Steve Sakaue Mr. Keys. I was saddened to hear that his wife is not doing well. My prayers to both.

The tables filled up fast as the downbeat approached. Must have had a 100+ people there by 8 PM. By 8:30 they were setting up more tables to accommodate the eventual 150+ in attendance.

There were pupus provided for the early birds. The servers spent the whole night doing wind sprints.

Doreen

Man it would be great to get laid (auto correct won't accept leied) as many times as Doreen. All you could see was a spurt of her red hair erupting from a Kiluaea of flowers. Before they started she doffed them as she announced, "Can not breathe."

Non stop night..... Dancing to great music, a Kanpai (Kampai) toast to Doreen, dance to break music then Doreen's B-day cake ritual. Everyone got cake and Ice cream which was so ono.

After the cake Doreen brought up a young guitarist to sit in. He started with a riff everyone is familiar with. I went, "Huh, who's gona sing Smoke on the Water?" Milton chimes in, "I dunno that song...." then leather lung screams into the mike doing a great rendition. all that was missing was the long hair, leather and mascara eyes!!!

Gary Moore was featured the next set bringing the house down and filling the floor with shake and bake action. Lots of fun banter (e.g Teasing Milton about his rock scream) between that had everyone rolling.

In a blink it was over which sucked. Oh, well next time.

Not sure what the heck is going on at Dots. They gave Bernie's Fridays to someone else for the next 3 months. Will have to do some snooping.

The good news is that Bernie still has Saturday and Wasabi is already booked for Saturday, February 26, 2012.

Oh, boy. This is gona be a good one. Straight from Doreen's kisser.....Gary Moore (likely won't be in character dress...Wat U Expect? It's a freebie...) and another Special international guest performer Elika Santos will be sittin' in.

If you're looking for the funnest place to be this Friday look no further than Dots in rockin' Wahiawa. Well, at least Friday when Wasabi plays.

Last dance at the Saint Louis Alumni Hall had maybe 100 attendees. I'm thinking this one will be at least as big. Still plenty of room to dance and people watch.....maybe get lucky! Lucky number that is..... maybe the other kine too!

Nobody knows, what is Ballroom Dancing?

The Internationals seem to have now grabbed the definition of "Ballroom" as theirs. And many in the dance world have agreed with them. I am willing but we must go further in our terminology, we must establish a good one for us, that do not wish to be included in their Ballroom Dance World.

Ballroom dancing classes and competitions are often broken up into bronze, silver and gold categories. Learn what they mean before jumping into one. You must know what LAGS means and how to avoid it. That is an acronym for Latest And Greatest Syndrome. The movement to music is never stressed, - only the movement with the object of being seen. A big defect in some of our Dance Instructors and abetted by the beginner students who want to look terrific, immediately. Nevah happened.

We must accept that ballroom dancers come in all shapes, sizes and ability levels. While some are professional, executing highly complicated and difficult choreography with grace and style, others are content to learn a few steps to get them around the dance floor at the Saturday night dance. There are many levels in between each extreme, and the bronze, silver and gold designations help to put some order to it all.

Bronze, silver and gold levels of ballroom dancing each have their own syllabus of steps, a goal for the dancer and a difficulty level. The total steps in all three divisions in most diciplines are less than 60. If there are over 600 documented steps and patterns in most dances, learning what that means helps the dancer know where they belong based on their skill level. Many ballroom dancing group classes are grouped by these designations.

Bronze Level Ballroom Dancing
Bronze level is the most basic and most important level of social ballroom dancing, and this is where all new students should start. And many intermediates and advance dancers revert to basics eventually. The goal of this level is to teach the dancer good balance, rhythm and how to move their body. They learn how to dance with a partner and work as a team. Many different basic movements must be "demonstrated." How many students are aware of the Rock Step or the Chassé? And even more, how many are aware that the Cha Cha Cha is a Rock Step and a Chassé?

In American Style ballroom dances like Waltz and Foxtrot, there is very little “continuity,” which is where the dancers pass their feet and flow into the next step. Instead, they end most patterns by bringing their feet together. The patterns in bronze level tend to be fairly simple, although they increase in complexity and difficulty as the dancer moves from beginning bronze to intermediate bronze and then to full bronze.

Since there are over 200 Bronze level steps and patterns, shouldn't the beginner dancer be more interested in those than the Silver or Gold? Twenty, thirty good basics learned and done well, the rest is a peice of cake.The extra benefits are that they are all easier to lead and follow than the Silver or Gold. Stands to reason and then, of course, they become Cultural Dancers.

What we will eventually see, and it is already occurring, the amalgamation of the bronze American style with the Club Dancer style. So these people can dance anywhere for the pure joy of moving to music. They will repeat many of the basic steps over and over again in sheer joy. How many out there understand that?

Spin Dr. @ Pearl Elks

First time back this year for the Spin Dr. @ the Pearl Elks Club. Not a large group last night but a fun and friendly crowd that were ready to dance and dance we did.

I was the first one there followed by Willow and Will. Deanie Bates and Bert Bertrum along with several other Aiea Ballroom members arrived shortly thereafter.

A few new faces graced the room and joined the action on the floor. Looks like Deanie signed up 2 of them for Aiea Ballroom's East Coast Swing class.

The Pearl Elks seems to be one of the best kept secrets in the area. The floor is big enough for 15+ couples (can be expanded) and glides wonderfully.

Danced with Candy (Spin Bob's wife) a couple of times. Turns out it was her B-day. After the dance she had a couple of relevant questions. Looks like she's made up her mind to dance. She told Bob that she'd learn first (he doesn't seem that interested but I think he will come around.)

He did mention that her parents danced Ballroom and were always fighting about how to do a step/pattern etc. and that turned him off to dance. I told him, "W/dance you gotta leave the button pushing out of it so that you can have fun."

Like Dots in Wahiawa the casual atmosphere is comfortable...no pressure. You can dance freestyle or partner.

I was asked to dance a couple of times which was a nice change. Believe it or not these days ladies have equal rights and are allowed to vote! Follows can ask Leads to dance, especially newbie Leads. (It will help them gain confidence. In the long run it pays off for everyone.)

As far as dance, relatively speaking we're in the same flotilla. In order to keep each boat moving forward we all need to help the newbies w/rowing practice. Otherwise they end up going in circles and give up thus diminishing the fleet.

I need to pin a note to my shirt (or tattooed on my forehead backwards for when I visit the Lua) that says "Take more Pictures!" I did manage 2 that came out nicely...sigh.

Dots this Friday offers the Hyper Beat Band.

This Friday 1/20/12. Fun starts @ 7:30, lasts till 10:30 PM (usually later....)

Never heard the Hyper Beat Band before but if Bernie booked them I'm sure they will be good. Every band that I've heard at Dots thus far has been happening. Don't feel like I'm rollin' the dice when I show up at Dots. For me it's a sure bet. Nothing compares to a live band!!!

Last week Legacy brought it as I'm sure the HBB will.

Confusion

Yes, my intentions are to have a lot of "fusion" but at the moment our readers are going through some "confusion" because of the ongoing rearrangement of our blog structure. And yes, we cannot please everyone, hopefully all should understand that.

The new name will come about before the end of this month and we can continue this blog with the year refreshed. Your feedback is crucial. This seems to have affected the other blogs too, but we will weather the storm. Wahiawa is holding the fort for this blog. We have Richie Fun doing a great job of covering Dot's in Wahiawa and we have some occasional news from Wahiawa Ballroom Dance Club.

The makings in the news of Helemano Plantation as a place to dance in a more formal style is very interesting and only ten miles from the North Shore. All part of our Cultural Dance structure. Many are looking forward to the coming creation of Dance Mililani, long over due. With a good Information Contributor, there will be a solid group of dancers developing there. Then with the new Dance Pavilion at the Patsy Mink Recreation Center this blog will have it made. Someone else may even develop another blog for this section, the west is the coming great territory for the universal and cultural dance.

For those of you who haven't heard of "Legacy" and decided not to attend their debut at Dots you missed a very good band. Two lovely ladies with pipes to spare and a solid rhythm section. The guitarist was pretty darn amazing and after a bit of sound tweaking the balance was perfect. Vocals up front w/music that drove, enticed and romanced.

They must have a large song selection 'cause they covered every dance rhythm, Cha cha, disco, rumba, ballads, waltz, rock. Groups covered were from the 50's on up including the Beatles, Journey. etc. The ladies covered all the queens of disco as well with their perfect pitch voices. Pretty amazing sound coming from 2 tiny lovely dynamos.

I got a shot in early on, meant to take more but then got lost in the music and dance. Sheesh, still can't multitask.

The usual suspects (except for Cher/Rich) opted for other canned music offerings about town. (I heard there were a couple of hot dates lined up...)

Bernie only brings in top notch groups and so I was titillated at the aspect of hearing/dancing to another of her offerings. During the break another group w/a horn took the stage. Talk about nostalgia, when was the last time you heard "fascination or Tijuana Taxi played live?" So cool.

Legacy has a following so there was a good crowd in attendance. Enough to keep the two servers spinning and sprinting. As usual not many dancing till after a few drinks.

If you have a chance to hear/dance to Legacy go for it!

During an interview with Frankie Manning:

Q: This has been a lifetime career for you on one dance! This is surprising to me! I don’t know if it’s surprising to you?

A: Well, it was quite a surprise to me when I first started out because when I started dancing I didn’t have the faintest idea or I never thought that I’d be a professional dancer. I just loved to dance, but I wasn’t thinking about going into it as a career thing. I didn’t think about it being what I wanted to do the rest of my life until 1937.

Before that I was dancing just for the joy of it. When we got a contract to go into the Cotton Club, I stepped back and looked and I said, "Wow, the Cotton Club!" The Cotton Club was the epitome of the entertainment world. The Cotton Club shows had the best singers, the best dancers, the best bands, the best comedians, the best everything, and when they said, "We would like you to sign a contract for six months here," I said, "What?! You mean I’m going to be dancing for six months doing something I love to do and get paid for it!" So then I thought, "Okay, maybe this is what I’m going to do for the rest of my life." But before that I didn’t think so.

Was notified that Dots had a private function (I shared on Oahu West) so yesterday stayed in town after business and shopping. Ended up at Rumors Big Chill. Haven't been there since Dots started live music. Nothing has changed, the regulars were there mingling and dancing to the same songs. It's okay in a pinch but after dancing to live music the DJ's choices left me flaccid.

It was nice to see some familiar faces and catch up. Saw Reggie strolling out and we waved him down. Told us he was heading to the Cupola for Nuvo! Yikes, I had forgotten that they have a steady gig there on 1st Friday.

We might have set a land speed record for our age group. The screen door missed our Okoles by miles.

They play from 7:30-10:30 PM. Got there before 9 PM. The place was 3/4ths capacity with people dancing to a great band. We were on the dance floor in a flash and basically never left it.

Nuvo made a so-so night fun! I have noted Nuvo for 1st Fridays on my 2012 calendar.

No pics again last night, camera sittin' at home next to my computer. You know what they say, "Last long time dat way."

I charged it and it's in my dance bag for tonight. Hey, 1 out of 3 is .333 average. Good enough for the Majors.

Amazing, Astounding

After a dead January 1st which was a Sunday, the hits have shown a marked increase. It is quite out of my understanding, but then what do I know? Almost seems like some outside manipulation. I had been trying to keep the total hits at over 334 per day which would be 10000 hits per month. Today they are over 400 hits and that means 12000 hits per month. Hard to believe.

Another Goodee: "We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day."

But then I have work to do and this is my hobby. In fact, I suspect I am getting addicted. In the West, Moanalua Corridor, Oahu - West and Platinum Horseshoe seem to be proceeding very nicely. I have confidence in Oahu -West. Just a matter of straightening out the territorial kuleanas. This also involves the change of name for the Platinum Horseshoe, whcih will now cover Waipio to the North Shore.

One suggested name for the blog was North Central, but it sounds like a train station. We will get more suggestions. How about a nice Hawaiian name for this section?

There is plenty of action predicted for that sector and Dot's in Wahiawa will be leading the charge. Somebody in Wahiawa Ballroom Dance Club may also decide to contact more potential dancers by contributing information to this blog.and a photo now and then. There is a possibitity of Whitmore Village.with information and for sure we will have an additional with the new Dance Mililani in a couple months.

Then there is the new Dance Pavilion at the Patsy Mink Recreation Center. That is going to be one big deal, with all Dancing Curriculum, it could be the center of dancing for the entire Hawaiian Islands. Of course, there is an outside chance of dancing on the North Shore. The next three months will tell us something. This blog will be rolling in no time at all, also the most difficult part for me to get to.

A Year of Time. .

Though even thinking on the subject of time may prove discomforting, it is not a bad idea—especially at the beginning of a new year.

As we look into 2012 we look at a block of time. We see 12 months, 52 weeks, 365 days, 8,760 hours, 525,600 minutes, 31,536,000 seconds. And all is a gift from God. We have done nothing to deserve it, earn it, or purchased it. Like the air we breathe, time comes to us as a part of life.

The gift of time is not ours alone. It is given equally to each person. Rich and poor, educated and ignorant, strong and weak—every man, woman and child has the same twenty-four hours every day.

Another important thing about time is that you cannot stop it. There is no way to slow it down, turn it off, or adjust it. Time marches on.

And you cannot bring back time. Once it is gone, it is gone. Yesterday is lost forever. If yesterday is lost, tomorrow is uncertain. We may look ahead at a full year’s block of time, but we really have no guarantee that we will experience any of it.

Obviously, time is one of our most precious possessions. We can waste it. We can worry over it. We can spend it on ourselves. Or, as good stewards, we can invest it in the kingdom of God.

The new year is full of time. As the seconds tick away, will you be tossing time out the window, or will you make every minute count?

Platinum Horseshoe has had a good year. The hits went up steadily with the help of Tim and Kapolei Chapter HBDA. Then even highter with a little blogging from Richard Sun. Then my fault and we hit the wall. Fortunately, Richard was able to find the loophole and we are back in business and the hits are very good. Since I like to keep the blogs somewhat territorial, Platinum will now cover the areas of Waipio and all the way to the North Shore. There have always been flickers of dancing in the North Shore.

They will have Dot's In Wahiawa, solid dance news and then we may get a little information from Wahiawa Ballroom Dance Club. Perhaps someday Whitmore Village will decide they want to join and then there is Mililani Chapter, HBDA which could get going with some progressive thinking as in Kapolei. Then they will probably include the new Dance Pavilion at the Patsy Mink Recreation Park. And I can see 100 hits per day. A year from now we can rename it.

Platinum Horseshoe Back In The Running

I don't know enough about blogging to know what happened, but I accidently deleted myself as Administrator and that left Richard and I as Guest Authors only. I communicated with Blogger and no response, so I intiated an entirely new blog, Oahu -West, covering a little more ground.

like bells and lights and tinsel, in some box upon a shelf.

The good you do for others is good you do yourself."

The hits in PH were coming down very slowly. So after a while, I asked Richard to delete himself out of the blog and then when the hits came down to a low level, I would delete myself, and with nobody left. Blogger would have to delete the blog. However the Plot Thickens. Richard discovered that he has been made Administrator by Blogger and then he reinvited me back in, also as administrator.

So we are back in and I will have to play it by ear. Richard likes Platinum Horseshoe and he should blog in it if he feels better there. Wahiawa Ballroom Dance Club will also be in the same blog. Whitmore Village and Mililani dance clubs may join in the action and you have a real basis for a going blog, that can include any action at the new Dance Pavilion in Waipio. Not to mention the fact that they could even overflow into the North Shore.

The new blog, Oahu -West is going great guns. I cannot stop that at the moment. The possibities are many. It will include the famous Kapolei Chapter HBDA and Dance Waipahu. And there is something brewing in Ewa. I shall continue with both blogs and the readers and the contributors will make that decision for me, they usually do.

You can get all the information that you could get from this blog and more. Lots of photos from Kaplei Chapter HBDA. Enough so that we are starting a photo album pages in the Dance Guide blog.

Meanwhile there may be an opening up of the Community Centers on Oahu for dancing. Generally this department has frowned on dancing as a frivolous activity. But with new blood they may emerge out of the middle age thinking. Then not many know that "Social" dancers don't need acres of dance floor. And we don't need to hog one exclusive place either.

One in Kapolei, this week, next week in Waianae, the Next in Ewa, and the next in Waikele and so on.
Some are to be built yet. The best example is Kilauea Recreation Center. Just the right size and with a good dance floor would outsell the famous Palladium, The nucleous would be with people from East Honolulu and there are plenty there.

Then the perfect spot in Waianae is the Waianae District Park. The most beautiful floor in the West already there. But like most in the West there is no record that any dancing has ever been done there. But then they even have rules that no dances are permitted at Nanakuli High School. How about that for being a century behind the times?

But to take advantage of all the hits, we may as well get in some advertisements. And first is our Recapper, "Dance Guide" blog, simply to recap all the dance Web and Blog sites available to our reader/dancers and we are sure getting a hellavah lot of them.

This wlll first of all include "our" immediate blogosphere. But hopefully we will include any of the others that would like to be included. All they have to do is communicate. But we must be careful to avoid those that do not wish to participate in any manner and respect their wishes.

Second is our very important successor blog to Platinum Horseshoe. It is doing very well with just the link connections. But I checked Google last night and it already has Oahu - West on.

The other search engines should have the connection by next week. They seem to go very fast nowadays. This blog already has over 25 average hits per day. May hit 30 by the end of the year. It will be a good start for this section of Oahu. We need more dancers like they have at Kapolei Chapter HBDA. Now those people are dancers and leading the way to the Waianae Coast. Kauai next? Good Kokua.

Then we have the newest club in town. The Waikiki Social Dance Club. Friday, December 30th at the famous Palladium. They are gonna have a huge crowd of dancers there.

Outstanding and unique for wishing to include music and dancing not approved officially by the Ballroom Dance Associations. They are going for the Universal Dancer, the Cultural Dancer, the Club Dancer and maybe even - the social dancer? Ha!

Anyway, the holidays are shaping up very nicely - have a nice time, everyone.

Just winding it down

The replacement blog Oahu - West is picking up steam. The article from Nora Dionisio, President Kapolei Chapter, HBDA plus the good photos sure woke it up.Then yesterday I posted the blog on Dance Waipahu at August Ahrens School, and the hits have no where to go but up. Take a look/see, the hits will be going through the roof.

"Every person regards their life as the New Year's Eve of time."

It will also help as soon as the search engines kick in with the URL. I ony notified Google and Yahoo, but the others have their own spiders and crawlers and they will pick up shortly too. By the first of January Oahu - West could be at the magic 34/day (1000 hits per month.) Of course I plan to be at th Golden Coin on Wednesday, Dinner/Dance for the Instructors of Dance Hawaii. I will make the write up and more photos, more hits.

Of course, Moanalua Corridor is starting to move but very slowly and we must be patient for the Fleet Lounge and the Elks in January starring Da Spin Doctor. There will be a good crowd starting to form. And each party at a consistent time once per month will solidify into something to look forward to. Fleet Lounge could even morph into the first Pau Hana Dance Party. There are so many office workers in the vicinity.

The Dance Guide is moving ahead slowly and is now over 34 average hits per day. There has never been anything like it before. But people are beginning to understand the "raison d'etre" and that will help. A regular recap of all the blogs. The party schedule for three weeks ahead has been cancelled. There are too many changes being made. But the photo albums are looking better.

Town Dancer is still in the number one spot. One more Guest Author and it should go on its own. Preferably someone in the competition and/or exhibition part of dancing. The blog is establishing that kind of readership. With one more good Guest Author Town Dancer could run up 200 average hits per day or the equivalent of 6000 hits per month. Time will tell.

Then the one that is going to be rolling now is Oahu And Beyond. With Richard's write up of town stuff and the new club in town, this blog is going nowhere but up. There will be more news on the new club in the Oahu And Beyond blog. The real social dancers on Oahu have been asking for just such a club as this. Is there going to be one in the West too? You'd better believe it!

Think of it, not so many rules and regulations. You can dance for the pure enjoyment of moving to music, like it has been done for centuries, without having someone inform you that you are doing it incorrectly. Gawd! Enough already. Of course we should respect those that must do it that way because they are competition dancers. And they can do it in their own places where they can dance with their own kind and no worry about "junk dancers." No harm done and every body happy that way.

I made a mistake and deleted myself as administrator in Platinum Horseshoe blog. I do not know how to fix it, and I asked Blogger, but they don't have a clue either. So I was forced to get another, new blog and named it Oaha -West. I sent the notice to the search engines about a week ago so it will take about 3 weeks before anyone can get on through a search engine.

Meanwhile, I cannot change anything in Platinum, but I can just blog. So I have links in the side bars of all the other blogs. If you can get on any of the other blogs, just click Oahu - West in the side bar and it will appear like magic on your screen. I have just posted Nora's terrific article on the Kapolei Social with some very good photos too. As per usual, Kapolei Chapter HBDA is looking very good.

We are hoping to hear from the famous Tim Cubero Jr. on his version of the Kapolei Chapter HBDA social. With his photos and my photos I plan on making four photo collages for the photo section of the Dance Guide.

A word to all possible line dancers

A line dance is a choreographed dance with a repeated sequence of steps in which a group of people in one or more lines or rows, without regard to the gender of the individuals. All facing the same direction and executing the steps at the same time. Line dancers are not in physical contact with each other. There are many styles of line dancing the most prominent, long time, the Country Western Line dancers that wear cowboy boots and hats and generally Western atire.

In the evolving group of line dancers the Western motif is no longer a necessary part of line dancing. And the increase in dancing to Latin music is very evident..

Yes, Richard and I can still blog in here but the hits are going to go gradually down because of the new blog, Oahu -West. I will be making most of my write ups in the New Blog. I have notified some search engines so it will take a while for them to be able to find it if someone asks. I will feel that I am making some contact when I can get over 10 average hits per day.Not anywhere near that now.

The easiest way for anyone to see the blog is by clicking the name on the side bar of any of our blogs except this one. None of us have the authority to set that up here. We will just gently phase over into Oahu - West. It shouldn't be that difficult. We've got some cool reader/dancers.

Maybe not completely dead yet.

Kapolei, the Beacon for the West

Got there before seven and I thought I was there too early. But there were plenty people already there and I could see the cars rolling in looking for parking. I got a couple of photos of the beginnings.

Met with the President Nora Dionisio and presented her with the CDs going to their key people. Went around and said my Alohas. Checked with Willy and Tim and there are so many nice people way out here in the West.

Augusto was throwing down his beautiful Christmas music and the Dance was starting to roll with the appropriate styles and there was good dancing until close to eight. I decided to let Willy and Tim get the dancing photos and for sure we will have some to post in the next blog.

The Christmas music continued to keep us all in the Christmas spirit and the people were enjoying their meal. This was followed by another round of good dancing. We are probably going to need more than one more blog to include all the photos I expect to get. Of course, this blog is where you get the hits.

The folks enjoying the Ono grinz, on the far and the near sides, listening to some nice music.

And finally got one where I could identify and get the names.

The line dancers, one of the biggest groups on this Island and led by DJ Augusto. There seems to be an addition of one or two more gentlemen everytime. So this is the place for line dancing men. And believe me some of them are very good. Of course most of the ladies are good too

And what is even more good about it is that they all have the same step routine, but the styling is so different and so gratifying. No clones, just beautiful to watch, it can be a terrific spectator experience.

I left twenty minutes early to get the last C bus at the Transit Center at 9:30. I biked it in ten minutes but now I know this short cut and it is easy. Was home by ten, not bad.

The Filipino DI

The "Dance Instructor" has been with us on Oahu all these years but under different names and not just Filipino. In Waikiki, they have been known (from the Beach Boy days) as Gigolos, Play For Pay Partners and Dally For Dough Daddies.

Most involved with the dance clubs have referred to themselves as "semi-professional." But as has been pointed out on several occasions by an experienced professional, "There are no "semi-professionals." You do for money or you don't.
And it has been more readily acceptable lately as carried over from the Philippines. For some wealthy women in the Philippines, ballroom dancing has risen from a mere social pastime to being almost a way of sustaining life. The phenomenon had been chronicled in Baya-rang Puso (Heart for Hire), a blockbuster film from the 1990s showing to packed houses.

In it, matinee idol Aga Muhlach plays a handsome young man who finds easy money working as a DI -- a ballroom dance instructor. His prime partners are the affection-starved, cash-rich matrons that Manila has in abundance. One after another, they fall for his charms and ply him with extravagant cash tips and gifts.

Afternoon-tea gatherings of the bluebloods of Manila society, known as the "Sparklers," are rich with gossip about the ballroom scene. Which matron has fallen in love with which DI? Which one has bought her DI a new car? Sometimes it is just gossip. Sometimes the ballroom has clearly led to the bedroom. Says a known dance regular: "You can always tell who's having an affair. It's in their eyes and in the way they dance."

Some are shocked, but not newspaper columnist Barbara "Tweetums" Gonzales. "I'd rather have my mother dancing the night away with her DI and having the time of her life than wasting away on her lonesome," she said.

Nearly all Manila hotels offer ballroom dancing, but only one, the Heritage, combines high tea and twirls. Also available there are female DIs. "Men want to dance too," says Geena Zablan, an executive at the hotel. "We have an increasing number of men coming in."

The Heritage's DIs are paid a regular salary. On top of that are the "hire charges" -- up to about $60 for an evening -- and tips. "You also have to feed him or her and provide drinks," says Zablan. "Like someone who drives for you, you feed your DI because they provide a service."

Is it going to move to the West when it starts grooving? You can bet your dancing shoes on that.

Okay, all of you newbies that had fun last week at Dots listening/dancing to Wasabi raise your hands. Now, all of you that shared with your friends raise your hands. Good, dat proves dat you consider dem real friends not da "be quiet, no make noise" when dey come ring da doorbell for hours den knock on da door so long even your knuckles start hurting. You know, da ones dat look in da windows das why you bought curtains.

You wanna know why they never get invited in? Too subtle! I usually wait till 3 AM and then stand in front of their house yelling, "I know you stay home, no try hide." By the time the neighbors lights go on, I'm in, suckin' down a cold one and watching reruns of dancing with the stars!

This week the King Pins are back and if you're lucky maybe Harvey will bring his 3 boobie prize birthday sweetie pie with him for all you buggahs to drool over. Don't even think of trying 'cause shim is spoken for here (by Harvey) and on it's home planet.......

Though the desired result was achieved this option is not near as cost effective as either of the first 2 choices.

Be patient and kind when you dance, especially with me 'cause w/2 left feet it's a struggle to do anything right.

Social Dancing

Even with all of the shortcomings of ballroom dancing on Oahu that I have been reading about, I have great hopes. We can see that in the Western part of this island, ballroom dancing is definitely getting to be more popular. And most everyone has been aware that the social club ballroom environment in town has been in decline for over a decade and no one knows why.

"It's not the difference between people that causes problems, it's the indifference."

There’s a melodramatic battle among the dancers, an unspoken melee. Despite each and everyone’s hard work, all the dancers end up in a hapless cringe of prestige. And many will not even talk about it. The cliques are passionate about it. In the West, dancers are willing to talk about it to make it better.

De jure authorities in the Social circles should be stricter in their control and not let the de facto rulers make the rules. In order to better promote the ballroom environment, they should be stalwart to come up with a system on how to run it, have it verbatim, and then implement it. A good system to accommodate problems will aid into resolving the matters that need to be resolved.

Ballroom dancing is much too serious a business to be taken for granted. It is a shame that those who are into it, though not all, are the ones underrating it and running it into the ground. More than anything, it is imperative to change the stigma of ballroom dancing in town in order to keep its ubiquity for the years to come.

Lastly, it’s actually just as simple as coming to terms with their problems in this potentially large group…well, maybe not that simple but…hey, it has to start from somewhere.

Revival? RESURGENCE is more like it!

There is no divine court to which one can appeal for a declaration that the so-called "real Latin" is the only way to dance; nor is any other styling the only way, whether American, Country, International, yours or mine. We should revel — celebrating the richness we have in the vast variety of the dance world as societies, cultures and individuals contribute their own color, texture and flavor to the mix.

Dance Waipahu at August Ahrens School

Friday was a nice slow day, and I accomplished most things, except getting a little more order in this place. But I got ready in good time and I rode my bike leisurely to the bus stop on the Nanakuli Beach before six. The sun had set some ago and there was a dark purplish-blue color in the horizon and it was getting dark.

"Competition Dancing: With the pain of pracitising, comes the glory of winning.

Practice doesn't make perfect... it makes permanent!"

The bus got there on time and fortunately two bike racks empty and my fellow bike rider and I had a choice of who is first. I was going Waipahu, he was going Kapolei. So I put my bike on first. He would be getting off first.

At Waipahu, plenty people waiting for the West Waipahu bus. I saw the E bus and I grabbed it. It takes me all the way up the hill to Paiva and Hiapo. From there it an easy bike ride downhill all the way to August Ahrens School. And I got there a little after seven and a good crowd already.

Unfortunately, the later trickle did not materialize, and Maurice said that it was probably because the change of venue and perhaps even some people going to go out the next day to the UH game. So we learn everywhere, we gotta take the downs with the ups. Those that were there were having a ball.

Went around to get information and danced a few. Of course, some ladies did not choose to dance, their choice. But the people were dancing.

When you'gotta dance, you gotta dance!

These people look like they are willing to dance the night away.

Most people dancing every dance and there is sure a lot of tango. Mostly American and Filipino style. There is going to be an amalgation there for sure, unique to Hawaii. And I predict it is going to be dilly. The absolute berries!

The traditional Ring of Prayer followed by the Onolicious Kau Kau, lucky people.

During the Kau Kau and the line dances I must prepare for my time home. But it is always so gratifying to see more men dancers in the line dancing. These men are developing their own styling to the rhythm of the different dances. No clones. They will carry this styling over to their partner dancing and from there it goes all around.

And there will be more men line dancing in the West than anywhere else.

What is vernacular dancing? Vernacular dance, is an umbrella term used to describe dance styles that evolved outside of dance studios in any available open space such as streets, dance parties, block parties, parks, school yards, raves, and nightclubs, etc. They are often improvisational and social in nature encouraging interaction and contact with spectators and the other dancers.

Fortunately, we are getting Da Reel Social dancers in this part of town.

Nice thoughts and I left before 8:30 and the bike ride was down hill all the way to the Waipahu Transit Center. I had a little time so I went to Times and got some large curd cottage cheese. (hard to find) and some sour cream to make my "jocoque." Then, a miracle, I came across some Mexican style Chorizo. Overpriced but I was not going to argue with anyone, I grabbed it.

The bus got there on time and I was home before 10:00 pm. Not bad. Put some of my favorite music on, made myself a little of the nectar of the gods and settled down to do my work. Finished it off the this morning.

First we must welcome Richard Sun as Guest Author in this blog. Now we have a dancer that is a real social dancer. The social dancers are gradually emerging into the limelight. And we shall continue to respect those learning to become competition dancers. It should be their prerogative and we recognize the different agendas.

The Schedule Three: Platinum Horseshoe, Moanalua Corridor and Oahu and Beyond. These blogs will be entirely my responsibility for now. They will be posted weekly every Friday for the coming week and will have schedules of classes, workshops and dance parties.

There will be a fourth one, the Dance Guide, which will also be weekly, posted on Wednesdays but cover only dance parties and it will resemble a Web more than a blog. It will have pages containing photos, and pages for the three weeks of party. So for the 14 blogs per week that I have assigned in our blogosphere, four will be entirely my kuleana. That leaves plenty for new Information Contributors and Guest Authors. And you have your choice of blogs. Plenty room for photos too.

Options are like hen's teeth for live dance music opportunities this Saturday. Pondering, "Where can I dance to great live music Saturday night?" What, you haven't been to Dots yet? No worries, as da bruddahs say, "So sad yo' story, snooze, you lose!"

Doreen just sent out her mailer to remind all Wasabi faithful of their Dots play date. Turns out Milton's B-day is on gobble gobble day. According to Doreen, "Milton can't compete with da Turkey." So the plan is to have it "ladle" and then "stuffing" his celebration into the gig. Okay, enough with the moaning.....you get what you pay for.

It's a rehearsal for an upcoming private gig in December where Wasabi will play backup. I've heard him sit in with them and the guy is amazing. Little Richard, Elvis, Sammy Davis impressions!!! What pipes he has. I swear God gave him all the talent a lot of other people (me especially) were supposed to get.

If you don't want to attend for the talent there will be red velvet cup cakes provided by Doreen. Yeah, dass right, one whole, free cup cake. Dat way no need order pupu fo' cheap buggahs like me! Like Black Friday I'll be camping out early dis week so da line forms behind me.

Everybody knows a Juice Bar, they sell juices. Orange Juice, Apple Juice, Pineapple Juice, Berry Juices etc. And a good fruit juice is not only deliciously appetizing but good for your health.

"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation

is not to utter words, but to live by them."

Nowadays, They also sell Slush Drinks. And very simply put, they are a little more liquid than shaved ice and using the same type of syrups for flavoring. Very thirst quenching bccause of the ice and the syrup is familiar and nice tasting. There are also other variations.

They also sell Smoothies. And what is a smoothie? Basically, a smoothie is a blended and sometimes sweetened beverage made from fresh fruit (fruit smoothie) In addition to fruit, many smoothies include crushed ice, frozen fruit, honey or contain syrup and ice ingredients. They have a milkshake-like consistency that is thicker than slush drinks.

Interestingly, the difference between a fruit smoothie and a fruit juice is that smoothies use the fruit in its entirety, whereas a juice simply extracts the liquids from a fruit. A Juice Bar on Ohau can have startup costs ranging from $20,000 - $50,000 and there are franchises available. However an established Night Club can install a special Juice Bar for from $2000 to $4000 depending on the location. And with the proper inducements to the "dancers," can make more profits than the alcohol bar. May come with the new Pau Hana Dances. (Tea Dance.)

Then I am concentrating on getting someone that lives in the Moanalua Corridor to feel the loyalty to this section which is evolving slowly but very naturally.

West Oahu is really rolling and I am amazed. More dancers are emerging from this section. The Waianae Coast is waiting. The Waianae District Park dance floor is the greatest. And the reader/dancers are becoming more aware of the dance floors. The size and quality of the material. Of course in the beginning it was just to find a place to dance.

Community Centers on the entire Island of Oahu would be perfect. But the Community Centers on the entire Island have a prejudice against having a dance hall in a community center, established almost one hundred years ago. So the citizenry must go elsewhere. They run it to suit themselves not the community.

The week is already starting good, with the hits rolling in all around. Now, if we can get another Richard Sun, this blog would go up over 90 average hits per day. But we are doing just fine for now.

Last week we acknowledged the new blog on the block, the Dance Guide. But it is still flaundering around trying to find its niche. It will be looking more like a Web Site as soon as the photo page is inserted.

Photo albums are a favorite in Web Sites. The blog will cover the "Party" and leave the rock solid important things like the classes and workshops to the individual blogs. The goal for now is a semi monthly publication covering three or four weeks ahead. But it will pretty much be played by ear.

We get most of our information from ordinary "flier kine" emails. So all we can do try to get a few important points in each post. Much of it comes in too late or too early, but what the hell, we are all learning. So we will try to include phone numbers and/or emails for the reader/dancers that are not that familiar with the group. They can call or email to be certain that it is not cancelled for a holiday, or used by other groups.

The Dance Floor Size

It is becoming more evident that the size of the dance floor matters, but for whom? Now we come to a more exact division of the dancers. I have seen a few dance floors in my short but happy life, and I have seen big, small, wood, tile, marble, permanent, portable, dry, wet, oval, square, long, raised, moving, and I have even danced on tamped, polished dirt floors.

Everyone accepts that the rootzi tootis, must have a large dance floor. That is their game and we should all respect it. They need a Palladium. Most of us do not. Well, maybe half a Palladium but that is stretching it a bit. The Palladium has over 10000 square feet of actual dance space.

A small studio can be just fine.

The Social Dancers now appears to be further divided into two groups. The extreme social dancers and closer to the old fashion type "street dancers" and which are terrific on small intimate dance floors of 400 square feet and less, as in a Night Club. (about the size of a two car garage.) They enjoy dancing "to" the music and are very good in phrasing. They can have more fun than a barrel of monkeys and just don't need to cover a lot of ground.

The biggest group requires a little more room for many have taken ballroom dance lessons and those have been developed from dancing in "ballrooms." And the old time ballrooms were huge, where many people wanted to have fun and socialize. There developed another large group, the ballroom dance teachers and many gave ballroom a bad reputation. For others, ballroom dancing became more exact, more disciplined, and the zest for the strictly social dancer began to ooze out of it.

Basically, your gut feeling should do you just fine as long as you trust that bigger is not always better. School cafeterias are just about the right size and they are usually around 2000 square feet. Most of the time a big dance floor is not as good as a smaller dance floor. (Assuming that dancing is important to you)

In other words, you may be better off having a packed dance floor, having everyone feel a little crowded and interacting with each other, rather than having your guests swim on a big floor. The argument that you want people to have space and not be crowded is only valid under certain circumstances.

If you are reading this, seeing all current pictures, and discovering for the very first time all the great fun we had at our recent HBDA Masquerade Ball, that means you should have been with us! You missed all the fun then at our October grand event, and we who were there could have had more enjoyment if you were with us!

Our Kapolei chapter again led the ticket sales, and we had a great turn out. Six couples - Willy and Nora Dionisio, Bob and Bea Pacheco, Martin and Leona Powell, Tim Cubero, Jr. and Lea Buschgans, Lino Mendoza and Bernie Jay, and Pete Quindara and Joy Spotts performed a fun dance routine called "Halloween Samba Rock" choreographed by Eric and Gail. We had an enjoyable time both during practice and at the actual relaxed performance!

To add to the amusement, we had Phillip Mun,Tim (myself) and (the Mrs.) Nieves Cubero, both Bob and Bea Pacheco, Lea Buschgans, and Nora Dionisio all join the Halloween costume contest. It was great to hear Faith Agbayani announce that our very own Nora Dionisio won first prize for the most extraordinary costume. She was dressed up as Marie Antoinette. And the bentos were ono too - I have to say one of the better ones! As always: The usual photo taking.... posing, exchanging cameras (that was especially amusing and witty!) See who they are!

Dot's In Wahiawa

Aloha Pepe,
Been following your blogs regularly since I discovered them earlier this year. You helped me once before with the mailer you sent out when I first started dancing 3+ years ago.

You are an encyclopedia as far as dance and I have learned quite a bit.

The reason I wanted to contact you is so maybe you could add Dot's in Wahiawa as a dance venue in your blog. I notice that you are open to spreading the word about all dance opportunities unlike Mary Beth who refuses to list Dots.

Dot's has been featuring live dance music in their Banquet Hall on Fridays for several months. Some Fridays they had no music listed due to private functions.

I got wind of the music at Dot's a couple of months ago and have attended about 5 times. I have danced to Wasabi, The Oldies & Goodies Band, Island Storm and this past Friday Audissey w/guest bands 808 Easy Street (Amazing Kalapana, America covers...Close your eyes and it sounds like a CD) and Chaotic 5 (a smoking preteen group that does Heart, Joan Jett, Journey etc.) I suspect that you've heard most of the groups mentioned and know just how good they all are.

Friday I found they have added some Saturdays to offset the Friday Banquets. Last night I danced to "The Oldies and Goodies Band." BTW they play again next Saturday 7:30-10:30.

Dot's can hold over a hundred people easily, the drinks are reasonable and pupus are available.

The wood dance floor (I need to measure it) can hold 12 couples easily and they leave the polished cement floor fronting it open. This adds twice the dance room. The crowd usually numbers around 60-80 but few dancers have taken advantage of this venue.

Honestly, It may not have the decor of the Warriors or Rumors but you get more bang for the buck as far as social dance.

Part One, The Latest at Kapolei

Our 3rd Quarter dance classes at Kapolei Elementary School are a favorite, as we are learning the East Coast Swing, the Viennese Waltz, and the Bolero. What a nice variety of distinctive styles this is to be able to learn and do on the dance floor: a dance with snappy syncopated timing in a distinct delay or relaxed approach to timing, the Swing: the original form of the waltz called the Viennese Waltz, known as the very first ballroom dance in the closed hold; and the romanticism of the Bolero, its slow- tempo Latin music that you can put your feet to.

Thank you, much, to our instructors Eric and Gail Tiwanak for bringing us this rich diversity of dance forms that we enjoy learning. Most especially is their central emphasis on us learning "style" that makes our appearance on the floor significant! Gail and Eric, we appreciate this!

In class, our many new classmates have found no problem if they come in with no partner! Although we have a few ladies without dance partners, they found it safe not to be expected to perform solos (smile). Our perceptive and most experienced instructors are seasoned to work around what could have been a problem by having all of us exchange partners every so often. No problem at all, you see!

Eric and Gail are also putting together another dance routine, this time East Coast Swing, for our Kapolei chapter dance routine at this upcoming Christmas Charity Fundraiser at the Ala Wai Palladium on December 3. They have not finalized the routine just yet, but we know it’s going to be a fun one. And we hope to have more students join in this time.

Oh, did I tell you that Eric was our past HBDA Council president for two years, and do you know that his wife Gail is our current president for our organization that has been in existence since 1959?
With nine brand new members in our Kapolei chapter this quarter, see, you could have been added to our growing list of “friends” and newborn dancers. My goodness, I’ve commented to newcomers that, “See, you already are beginning to look like a dancer on the first night!” HBDA brings the best and brightest teachers to make us all look good - not just for these pictures you are staring at but also for the dance floor that waits for the rhythm of your feet. Talking about “Pleasure.”

I haven't been able to trace down Line dancing yet, but can Ballroom dancing be far behind. There is another Mexican restarant in Waianae, so one of them is bound to start something.

A good Latin club would go over with a bang. Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, Merengue, Samba, Tango, Salsa and don't forget a little Latin Waltz too. The three count was danced by the Toltecs 2500 years ago. Then when the Waltz came in after the Spanish had been in the Americas for a couple centuries, the waltz kicked in and the three count picked up again. Anyone that wants a CD copy with Latin Waltzes, I will give them one.

Seems suddenly but it has been coming for a while. Platinum Horseshoe blog is picking up steam and we are getting readers not only from West Oahu but from many other places. But what is dance blog? Nobody knows for sure and many are aware of this. But if anyone is going to know something, it is us.

The entire group of participants, which will include the readers, will develop a very good definition in a short time. We are not there yet. When we begin to get comments in our blogs, then we have really begun to define our dance blogs. Then it becomes Social Media and that is my aim.

Or, as Jesus succinctly put it, You cannot serve God and wealth" (Matthew 6:24).

Got the news on Rock n Roll from Maile Yagi in Wahiawa and I made the poster. So you can see that everyone of our reader/dancers has very valuable opinions and they should be heard.

Their viewpoint is unique, no one has exactly the same viewpoint. That is what makes them so valuable and there has to be an opportunity for them to be heard.

There will be some differences from Dance Guide blog compared to these blogs. From various suggestions they will go semi-monthly but cover the entire month ahead. That is about as far as most of our reader/dancers will plan ahead. The consistency is what is hoped will give us readers.

Halloween Dance Waipahu at August Ahrens

It was a nice day Saturday and I haven't decided yet if it is going to be XP or Vista. Neither are perfect but then neither is Windows 7. Therefore perfection is not what I am seeking. Whichever gets the job, (my job) done, that's it.

Got to August Ahrens too early but I wanted to witness a start, hit the right buses, and waited until six for someone to open the gates. Mr. Klein came in first then Maurice and then Wayne and Joyce. We all helped bring in some of the stuff, and before seven, I got the first photo at the reception desk.

Watched the people come in and they were coming in. I got a chance to see the
Arrowheads and got the photo for the "Good People" photo in Platinum Horseshoe blog. It will be in on November first. Then proceeded to get the preliminary line dancing led by Mel and Rose Calpito.

The line group was much bigger waiting for the Kau Kau.

Had a couple of dances and then got a photo of some of my good friends sitting close by.

Got a dance and then got the photo of the "Good People" recommended by Maurice for the Moanalua Corridor. The designated ones must have forgot. Apparently everyone was enjoying the Line dancing while waiting for the Kau Kau line to get smaller.

Then it may look like a blog now, but it will begin to take on the look of a Web Site and behave like one, perhaps updating once a month.

Are you merely curious about Dance Events in the West or do you really care? Most of the reader/dancers who read this blog are believers. They believe in fairness, compassion, optimism and hope.

They believe in the essential goodness of the world. That problems can be solved. That too many rules in dancing can be alleviated and that dancing for the common folk can be saved. And we are well on our way in the West, And that's the way it gotta be, slowly but surely.

different dancers but in the same dancers at different times."

From the Wikipedia: In the early 1900s European and American dancers started to rebel against the rigid constraints of Classical Ballet. Shedding the authoritarian controls surrounding classical ballet technique, costume, and shoes, these early modern dance pioneers focused on creative self-expression rather than on technical virtuosity.

Modern dance is a more relaxed, free style of dance in which choreographers use emotions and moods to design their own steps, in contrast to ballet's structured code of steps. It has a deliberate use of gravity, whereas ballet is rigid in its technique. Because of the common history, the two forms (classical ballet and modern) share a similar terminology and structure.

Modern dance is a term that applies to a variety of different disciplines, all with subtly different techniques, that responded to the imperialism of ballet through varying, culturally specific catalytic factors.

Growing up in Makaha, the late pioneer surfer Rell Kapolioka`ehukai (Heart of the Sea) Sunn slept not with dolls but with her surfboards.

Though there is little dancing in Nanakuli, a new group with a new blog is forming ever so slowly. The Nanakuli Ridge. And the founders are only four separate locations. The Nanaikeola Senior Apartments, the Kokua Mau Work Center, Shelly's Hair Studio and the Ono Steak and Shrimp in front of Food Giant. From there we go left and right, down Farrington. The Blog Site

If Web sites are the Magazines, then Blog Sites are the daily newspapers and most Dance blog sites just furnish information about dancing. The truth is that a blog is hardly the place where you would want to reach for your credit card. Blogs rely on fresh content. It’s evolving in Hawaii that a dance blog should post at least 2 to 4 new entries a week.

Dancing on the Waianae Coast?

Dance blog reader/dancers visit blogs to get fresh information or insight on topics that are current and important to them. The most interesting are the less complicated ones with enough photos to make it more interesting. Dance Blogs tend to be more opinion-based than Dance Web sites.

And we are working on making them more so. They will not be from only one blogger but from many points of view. The real value of blogging isn't the capability of the tool, but the ability for each and every page on the site, each and every article, to invite and display feedback from readers. This is a dramatic difference because it changes a monologue, a "brochure," into a dialogue with reader/dancers.

Indeed, often the most compelling reading on a Weblog are the comments that others leave and the debate that often ensues as people add their two cents and disagree with each other.

We have yet to see much of this in our Hawaii blogosphere because most of our reader/dancers are very polite in public. It will come but it will take time to be recognized and used in Hawaii, probably West Oahu will lead the way.

While there are no laws stating that a site must have certain capabilities to truly be a Weblog, it is nonetheless true that most blogs allow comments, time stamp their articles, show them in newest-to-oldest order, and are not forcing anyone to revisit the site with any sort of frequency.

Summing it up, none can really totally replace the other and both blogs and web sites have their individual very important key roles to play in the marketing success of any dance organization in Hawaii. Dance Web fans think in terms of the old fashion, "instead of" where as Dance Blog fans think in terms of current fashion, "in addition to." The more publicity the club gets the better, especially if it's free.

Does it matter? Who knows? The Shadow knows. (anyone remember that one?) The counter is still your best bet, or you may be just beating your gums. Just don't get into "Store Bought Hits." More differences? You bet!

And as our readership grows, (they are our most important faction,) more reader/dancers will become aware of the differences. The blogs will naturally increase in number. And with counters we will all know which way is the flow. For those that can't cut it, it will be obvious that they are doing no one a favor.

Just got some good rumba music, but it is Da Reel Teeng. So many with the old slow, quick, quick. These are with the inverse from regular ones we hear. These are Pum, Pum, Pu-um. The two count on the last Pu-um. The accent on the One. So you break easy on rock step, step back on the second Pum and you got the slow in the last Pu-um. A different feeling, just beautiful. Not understood by the ones that dance "correctly."

The Web Site

There is a difference between a Web Site and a Blog Site.
But then everybody knows that. Let us try to see how.

store it out of the reach of time."

Dance Web Sites are the equivalent of Magazines in the Pubishing fields and are more into sales. The sale of their club or other dance organizational functions. Dance teachers, dance parties, dance lessons, workshops, showcases, festivity dances, shoes and dance costumes.

They usually have the info on the top brass easily available. Monthly and even yearly schedules, photo and video albums, club history and other pertinent information of potential interest to their reader/members.

Dance Web site members come to a site to look for specific information. That information does not need to be new. It just needs to be what the reader/dancer is looking for and they are usually subdivided into a number of complicated pages.

These tools allow dance clubs to create beautiful sites with compelling content, but they don't allow neophytes or non-technical people to maintain content or add new content. And they tend to look down on Bloggers and blogging.

But even with these sophisticated tools, most Web sites are static creations and most dance organizations view their Web sites as digital brochures. It's very rare for a traditional Web site to be updated more frequently than once every month or two.

The Blog Sites are next on the blog agenda and of course, you already know that they are much more current and that we are still seeking the elusive Information Contributor. Now if we could get one more from Kapolei, to report (with photos) occasionally on the classes, Wow! That would be a big treat for the readers and help Tim out tremendously. Of course, I have to work on Dance Hawaii too.

Halloween:
Q. What tops off a ghost's ice cream sundae?
A. Whipped scream.

Line dancing, remains as the best place for a person to get their "street" dancer smarts. We have on the ultra beginners side, just walking to the music, zombie like. On the other extreme are those that are shaking their heads, shoulders, hips, legs, feet and toes. Somewhere in between is the real Universal dancer coming through, who is completely enjoying the movement to music, “in the correct way,” that is the natural way and they will never be stuck together at the second rib.

When they get into ballroom dancing they have it made in the shade. They have the rhythm and some styling of their own. They are already dancers, now it is a matter of partnering and learning new moves.

This blog is just recovering from the terrific blogging by Tim Cubero on the Kapolei Chapter - HBDA social. The hits went through the ceiling and are now comfortably in the seventies. 70 average hits per day is 2100 hits for a 30 day month. Unbelievable? Of course! If no one believes us, it's all right with me.

Can anyone imagine what will happen when we have one more contributor? Wow, boggles the mind. Dance Hawaii, Wahiawa Ballroom Dance Club, you reading?

Hopefully too, we can find a place for Da Spin Doctor and his Golden Oldies music for the middle of the week. Like what he has at the Elks but with a little more room, so that more of us can have a swinging time.

Lucky we are also getting some terrific dancers in this part of Oahu, and more, some may be interested in contributing a little information for their fellow dancers. Dance Hawaii is moving right along and sending us routine flyer kine stuff and Wahiawa Ballroom Dance Club sends flyer kine stuff. We also get many flyer kine stuff from other people.

We get photos and real communication for our readers only from Kapolei Chapter. I and the reader/dancers certainly appreciate this and to prove it, the hits go through the roof. Why? Simple, our readers are interested in another viewpoint.

How could anyone forget our recent second quarter social?! Looking at everyone's faces that evening, you could tell that students, visitors, and dance instructors were truly enjoying themselves.

Our Aliamanu friends just loved dancing to Augusto's music, and the instructors always enjoy our socials because our chapter gives them the importance they justly deserve. Special thank you to Deej who came to our social and who especially came out to support us at our recent Waltz Routine at the Ala Wai Palladium. She reflected: "... I might forget how to dance, but I'll never forget my friends."

Important Information You'll Be Happy To Know:
HBDA Kapolei Chapter Third Quarter Classes: 8 Monday evening classes, 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., from October 3 and ending November 28, 2011. Social Dance & Pot Luck - December 5.
East Coast Swing, Viennese Waltz, and Bolero.
Instructors Eric and Gail Tiwanak (their first time to teach at Kapolei)  

In addition to the 8 Monday classes, third quarter students are entitled to attend HBDA Ohana Nights (non-ticketed events) at the Ala Wai Palladium and Review Classes at the Aliamanu MIddle School free of charge.  
Registration - during the next two sessions, on October 10, and 24. (No classes on October 17, Kapolei Elementary’s Parent Night.)

Eric and Gail are also teaching us an easy and fun dance skit for the upcoming Masquerade/ Halloween Ball on Oct. 21 at the Ala Wai Palladium. Short notice but confident we'll get it right in time! All third quarter students are encouraged to join in.

Argentine tango reeks with sex from beginning to end. International Tango is sterile and has absolutely nothing to do with sex; zip, zero, nada. "And you, Shorty, that is heel, toe, toe, heel, not the other way around." So what's doin' with Filipino Tango? Can it be modified to something that resembles Da Reel Teeng?

Knic Knacks

We have so many people in the process of learning about blogs it is getting to be fun. Most of our reader/dancers do not know what Social Media is. In fact none of the bloggers on this island are sure either. Fortunately we are all learning at a nice pace.

"Every single thing changes and is changing always in this world.

Yet with the same light the moon goes on shining."

This includes the "Wheels" that are supposed to know everything. In Social Media, for instance, we are definitely not breathlessly waiting to mark our calendars for next years bash, whatever it may be. The reader/dancers of these blogs are interested in this coming week. Next month? Later for that, Jack, much later. That is blogging.

And that is the why we are still in process of forming the weekly schedule blog on Platinum Horseshoe. We will make our own rules and getting the appropriate opinions is a very difficult thing. Some would rather not share their pearls of wisdom. But this is "blogging," a horse of a much different color.

"I Don't Wanna Dance" by Eddy Grant

We are still beating the bushes for some signs of dancing on the Waianae Coast. This blog still remains everyone's chance to get your two cents in from anywhere. There are rumors of line dancing but they may be a little picky. In Waipahu we had one tell us we must get permission. Wow, that has been on the textbooks for decades. Always followed later by the "you must a get permission to ask for permission." You gotta drop those like a hot potato.

Kapolei Chapter HBDA is leading the way in Kapolei and Waianae Coast. It is doing a great job, with the best Information Contributor we got, the famous Tim Cubero Jr. They are also fortunate that their DJ Augusto Jarra is also a terrific line dancer and their line dance group is naturally one of the best with plenty men and getting more. Just received poster from Willy, and as I have said before, these people are leading the way. And of course the hits go through the roof.

Kapolei is still a long ways from Second City though most things are already in place. Too many high class over two million dollar homes of non-residents. So the night life that should be there is a very long ways off. They don't even have a nice cocktail lounge. I have been to the only bar in town and found it in use by a private party. Too many still living in the last century. "Keep the country, country." They don't realize that they live on an urban island now.

We have some good news from Wahiawa Ballroom Dance Club for next week. they have a nice dance program coming up. And we will add others as soon as we get notice of the new club and whatever in dance.

Ewa and Ewa Beach are still wide open for some new dance action but the only official ballroom in West Oahu is the Legacy Ballroom in Waipio. And of course, the natural expectation of a new club in Waipio. However no one can recall if the Legacy Ballroom has ever been used as a ballroom, for dancing that is.

Yes, I know we are all waiting for Tim's Part Two of his wonderful essay on the Social of Kapolei Chapter HBDA. However he is a busy man and we are lucky to get what we can get.

The Sunday Platinum Horseshoe blog is on solid ground as an information center for dancers in West Oahu. The week is turning out to be the most natural length of time for planning by our reader/dancers. And that is who we learn from. We will do a lot better when we get more dance locations and more information contributors.

Conan O'brian says:
"A study in the Washington Post says that women have better

verbal skills than men. I just have one thing to say to the

authors of that study: Du-uh."

Keep the information coming in so that our readers can make good choices. Photos wouldn't hurt none either. Ideal is six to eight people. Very difficult to get. From there up or down is less effective. We want the most efficient coverage for more of our individual friends and neighbors.

With six people the faces are clear, there is plenty of room for the names, the location and the occasion. Perfect. We don't have room for hundreds of photos but how about one or two of your favorites? The berries!

We continue to post on Sundays and add/prune to the blog. And we are slowly evolving a good group interested in enjoying the movement to music without getting a bunch of rules to goof it up. We will continue to respect the wishes of those who would rather not get involved.

“The Night Kapolei HBDA Had Its Social”

“Yikes, the parking lot is already filled, and the party hasn’t even started! Quick, get inside! I hope we can still get a table.” Those were the words I pleaded as my wife left the car and quickly approached the door of the Kapolei Elementary School cafeteria. Loud laughter, matched to the music and dancing, ruled the night.

That was a premier to an exceptional night of fun, as HBDA Kapolei recently celebrated its end of the second quarter with a grand social that only President Nora Dionisio and her husband, Vice President Willy Dionisio, best know how to give!

The party was a perfect fit! We and everyone else without exception were still able to grab a table made comfortable with old and newfound friends, even though the turnout jumped tremendously close to 100 in attendance. Not surprisingly, as a tradition, the spread of food was again more than enough with an enormous variety of main dishes and enticing desserts. The miracle of loaves and fish satisfied both chapter members and visitors, as the old tradition of returning to the buffet table for more was not broken.

Word had already quickly spread! Friends from our sister chapter, Pearlridge, mixed well in the crowd. Their group was headed by their president, Benilda Yokono. Also with us were Pearl City President Danny Ramos and Vice president Lily Tolentino.

A large contingent of 'rarrin' to go dancers' from Aliamanu sparked the night. Aliamanu along with Kapolei are the two chapters of HBDA's District 1, currently under the auspices of Assistant Dance Director Romeo Quemado. They really do look forward to our socials. It was more than a pleasure to see all our former HBDA members and friends. To color the night was the fantastic music provided by "DJ" Augusto and Noemi Jarra. No wonder our dance floor was always packed with ballroom to line dancing.

No doubt, these are Happy Dancers.

There were so many things we did that night. We had a good opportunity to practice the dances we learned during the last quarter – Bachata, ChaCha, and even the Peabody. No wonder all the cameras were out that evening clicking away at old friends and new friends dancing or posing for the lens. Both portraits and group shots were easily taken, with trading of cameras for more poses made many of us quick celebrities.

Benny and Faith Agbayani together with Elsa and Romeo Navares were the most popular celebrities; a lot of us wanted for them to be in our pictures.   Other noteworthy attendees who came to our social were: Mel Camat and Susan Masumoto, Danny and Greg Carreon, Mark & Patty Dela Cruz, Jack Legal and Shoko Ballesteros. We spent time recognizing all our instructors as it was a joy to see all of them come out to join us – They are all volunteer teachers who give us an outstanding dance program.

More of the many nice people making this such a remarkable occasion.

Our Kapolei social night also warmly recognized all of the chapter volunteers who made our chapter the success that it is. Whether it was helping out in our fund raising activities, selling tickets, helping out at the Palladium or Aliamanu Middle School, volunteering as chapter officers, recruiting and retaining membership - all their personal contributions have been invaluable and well appreciated.

Everyone knows the people at the top, Nora, Benny, Willy and last but certainly not least is Faith. We all hope they keep up the good work.

Nuttin' Doin'

Slow time in the Western Oahu dancing world. The hits are coming down. But I would certainly advise the reader/dancers to read Calvin's blog in Town Dancer. With a link to You Tube for some of the most beautiful Waltz we will ever see. American Style, none of this glued at the second rib stuff. It is most refreshing, specially that we see so much of the same type in West Oahu, social dancing to da max. Don't miss it.

I hope the reader/dancers of Club Dancer are aware and attend the workshops available, as per Calvin's blogging. Now that I will attempt to get as much American Style dancing into Club Dancer blog. Send it in. I'll print it. We are getting some "Club Dancers" attending dances at Aliamanu and Radford. Good. The entire enchilada is evolving into a nice dance group.

No initiation fees, no monthly meetings or monthly dues, just attend when you wish to dance and enjoy the environment. We just have to get more people on the Waianae Coast interested. Most of the evening social life is controlled by the Military and that will change.

We have the best dance floor in the West at the Waianae District Park. So hopefully, some thing will start there soon. We are so fortunate to have some of the best American Style teachers, on this Island, in West Oahu. We just have never shown enough appreciation for their efforts. Dance Hawaii is attempting to do just such a thing. Ask Creighton or Beverly Goo, they'll tell you.

Meanwhile in town many are becoming aware of the publicity available through our blogosphere and that as we get more readers, it is becomes very effective. This requires social media, a little from everyone.

I was all set to go to the Elk's Tuesday, but I didn't feel well. But anyway I took a shower and got ready hoping I felt better. It was no go and I stayed home.

"Usefulness is happiness, and... all other things are but incidental."

And I hoped I would feel better on Wednesday to go to Dance Waipahu Social at the Visayan Hall. They are not a big group or that well known yet, so a little publicity would help. I had a good day getting information from Nanakuli and got ready.

I was at the bus stop before 6:30 and I get lucky now and then. Like the song says, "On a clear day you can see forever." I could see the beautiful sunset colors with the sun just sitting on the water in the horizon. I timed it and it was out sight in seven minutes. But the terrific yellow and orange color remained until the bus got there a little after 6:40.

I was at the Waipahu Transit Center a little after 7:30 and at the Visayan Hall in a six minute walk. They just finished their ring of prayer and I said hello to most, they looked happy.

They had line dancing, naturally. Sally Forges gave a beautiful demonstration on basic rumba movement. Very pertinent. Then Beverly Goo gave all of us interesting information of how we can help the Instructors of Dance Hawaii who contribute their services to the welfare of the dancers. They have Zippy and McDonald deals. For more info, contact Beverly or Creighton Goo.

I had to get some photos, but unfortunately I am doing something wrong, the photos didn't come out. I lost the ones I took at Nanakuli too. There may be something to do with pressing the buttons. I will have to check that out.

Left early enough to get the bus home. Stopped at Times Market for some goodies. Then the bus was late 20 minutes and I was in Nanakuli close to ten. I dropped into Sack N Save to get the Orange Juice and I was home way after at ten, not too bad.

The Sunday Platinum Horseshoe blog is developing as a solid information pillar for West Oahu, Naturally it is going to get better when we get more dance locations and we get more information input. Keep the information coming in so that our readers can make good choices.

There is nothing much doing on Sunday, so the blogs will be posted some time on Sunday morning and may include the Saturday night party. However there will be more choices later on, for sure.

We continue to add and to prune, and are slowly evolving a good group interested in enjoying the movement to music without getting a bunch of rules to goof it up. We will continue to respect the wishes of those who would rather not get involved.

We will add on as soon as we get notice of the new club and whatever in dance. Hopefully too, we can find a place for Da Spin Doctor and his Oldies but Goodies music for the middle of the week. Like what he has at the Elks but we need a little more room.

We are still beating the bushes for some signs of dancing on the Waianae Coast. This blog still remains everyone's chance to get your two cents in.

The Rock Step

The Rock Step is one of the most basic movements in ballroom dancing and even in exhibition or competition dancing. Almost never taught as an individual all encompassing dance movement.

"Seeking happiness, We pass many travelers headed

in the opposite direction, seeking happiness."

Like most movements there are six. Rock forward, also called the break (usually the leader in rumba), full weight on the left foot and rocks back to full weight on his right foot. And he usually breaks on the loud noise, (the accent,) whether it is on the one, two, three or even four.

He can also rock forward with his right foot, rock backward with left or right foot and rock side ways with his left or right foot.

The partners break in complementary fashion in Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, Mambo, Salsa and perhaps fifty or so other Latin dances. The partners can sometimes break towards each other or away from each other.

In swing, the partners always break away from each other. We do not have room to detail all the five thousand other dances that use the Rock Step.

We are gradually getting in touch with the reader/dancers. This is not the same as communication to or from the "Wheels." When we get through to enough of them, there will emerge the information contributors, because they will know that it is information shared with their fellow dancers.

I have tried to create a cause and the starting point of evangelism is having a great thing to evangelize. A cause seizes the moral high ground. It is a product or service that improves the lives of people, ends bad things, or perpetuates good things. It is not simply an exchange of things/services for money. Can we do that in the West? For many, the issue is still in doubt.

August Ahrens School Dance

Friday went by pretty nice, and they came to pick up the computer table that I had to get rid of. Then UPS delivered my foot and leg massager. Maybe it will work to make my Peripheral Neuropathy a little more livable. They don't want to mention it at the VA because they think I may want them to pay for it.

"A great obstacle to happiness is to expect too much happiness."

Missed the bus, but glad to go back, I had low tires so pumped them back up. Got to Waipahu Transit at almost seven. Got the Waikele bus up Paiva to Hiapo and rode the bike from there to August Ahrens.

There was a nice crowd by the time I got there and more coming in, many people that live in this part of town. The same people I use to see in town dances are now finding it better and easier to go with your more local crowd.

I hope it was the same at Wahiawa Dance Club. They also had a big blowout going on the same day. They used to send us some beautiful posters that I could just plunk, plunk into the blog.

They moved the reception table to the other door and only Wayne and Maurice were there. Jo Cassidy was there with her shoes and a nice crowd around her, so I got my first pic.

I am learning. Posed photos require names. But "candid" photos, (not posed) which most candid photographers take, do not require names. Makes sense, then you can take more candid photos of all the fun without worrying about getting any names.

Met my good friends Ben and Emmie Visitacion. And I had a few dances here and there. Took a couple photos. I am getting hazy again. I have to get some advice from some of the good "photographers" out there.

And they are coming in, the left at the entrance and

the right corner towards the Kau Kau tables.

Long time no see lady, in my old age names escape me,

but very nice to see her and get a nice group photo.

The impressive "Ring of Prayer" and no apologies are necessary

to anyone for the religious thanks.

Line dancing while they wait for the line fo' Kau Kau to get smaller. Getting more men dancing and even without cowboy hats or boots, they are getting to be the best men line dancers on this island. Come on men, join in.

For me it is time to get the #40 bus going to Nanakuli. Fortunately, it is down hill all the way to the Waipahu Transit Center. I go over to Times to get a few goodies and a short wait and the #40 arrives.

Turned my music on in the the computer and I was home in no time. Just felt like resting and continued with the music and it had be with a Rum and Coke. So how was your day?

The information from Wahiawa did not come as a poster, so I took a chance to avoid too much work. It copies but not the way I would want to. Then I opened it with the "new" blogger method and lost the pictures. So I had to get the text into every day format in my Text Editor, and from there back to the blog and then add the pictures. But I couldn't change it to lower case. Whew!

Anyway with six blogs my hands are pretty full. Wahiawa is having a dance in Wahiawa on the same day as Dance Waipahu is having theirs at August Ahrens, (see simple poster below.)

Everybody is welcome with their dance news. But some news is very difficult to convert to communication on a blog, and some I just skip it. I know it is difficult to just send me the information but this other is - well ===

We are getting choices in West Oahu. People are coming from the North Shore and from Windward Oahu. And things are going to get even better yet. I have applied for the job at Dance Waipahu. Of shoveling the money into the safe as it comes in.

The New Blog on the Coast

Going up and down the Wai'anae Coast is interesting for I learn something every time. So since I am meeting so many new people that have lived and worked on the Wai'anae Coast all their lives, I thought of a blog just for this area.

"You have two chances of doing good without working, slim and none."

The new blog is called "Wai'anae Coast." I am so original. And I am starting out with the organizations that do the most for other organizations on the coast. Then of course there is Nanakuli, where I live and where I start.

First organization there was Kokua Mau, that exists to help handicapped people. I donate items occasionally and they in turn have furnished me with some paid help to clean up my kitchen and bathroom once per month. A relief for me. I am not the greatest housekeeper in the world.

Then I got some photos in Thursday blog of the Bingo and pot luck at Nanaikeola Senior Apartments, where I live. They will be installing a dance floor in the first floor community room and that sounds good to me.

I will introduce some people from our local Sack N Save and hopefully from the Nanakuli office of the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center. They are also helpful to a lot of places on the coast. Then work my way up to Lualualei.

The entire enchilada then will free me from too many extraneous items not related to dancing in Platinum Horseshoe blog. For the readers on the coast, they can read either or both blogs and make comments on either one or both.

Competitions in West Oahu

Yes, I am aware of the talk around here of "clean" competition dances at the new Dance Pavilion. Interestingly enough, though, it is my understanding that even in the world of Ballroom dancing, the competitions are filled with politics and nepotism. If they aren't able to remove these problems from an objective goal, then what hope do we have?

"Everyone wants to succeed; some want to succeed so badly,

they are willing to work for it."

Then we have the problem with the rules and regulations laid down by the powers in International Competitions. It would be easier to just restrict dance competition at the new Dance Pavilion to American and Country Style of dancing and go roughly according to the American style of regulations which are not as strict.

Competitions bring up huge emotions. Whenever you have a winner, you have one or more losers. And if the losers have lost because of a subjective judgement, they generally will have hard feelings about this.

Maybe they did a better job and the judge wasn't fair, maybe not. Either way, chances are they will feel ripped off. And to some extent, it doesn't even make sense to say "better job" because we are talking about a subjective dance.

Some people will think they did a better job, others won't. You're almost guaranteed to have dissatisfaction, though, especially if the stakes of the competition are high, whether in monetary gain or bragging rights.

What all of this forgets is that, in the West, we are a family. Would you want to compete and win against your brothers and sisters if there was a good chance they would be angry and feel like you didn't deserve it afterwards? We are becoming a huge group of interconnected dancers, and together we can create something enormous.

This creates power, and this creates politics, and I have watched dancer scenes eat themselves due to politics. If we want our scene to be happy, then we should go to great lengths to avoid political separation. If you can't have honest talks with competitors after most competitions then you'll see that we are not fostering this family togetherness.

Another oddity that comes out of competitions is the selection of teachers. It is generally recognized that those who win competitions have good marketing power for their teaching career. If someone can show me the connection between being able to perform in a competition and being able to perform in the center of a dance class, I'd love to hear it, but I haven't seen it yet.

Before I sound hypocritical (as I have been involved in competitions as a participant and judge), let me make a few points about how I think competitions can be done in a positive manner. Make them light-hearted. Don't make people feel like the "best dancer" or "new teacher" award goes to the winner.

Judge based on what people care about in the dance. I personally avoid the non-social based competitions such as showcase and the like and stick to Jack and Jill and Strictly Ballroom competitions.

Try to figure out how to avoid as much of the subjective nature of judging as possible, as well as any appearance of the subjective nature of judging. For example, if you have a local dance competition, find judges from outside.

Consider audience judging if you can do it without it becoming a popularity contest. Be clear about what you are judging on, have standards and then adhere to them regardless of what you may feel.

If you are entering a competition, embrace the Tao and let go of any desire you have over the outcome, as best as you can. And most of all, be sure to go social dancing afterwards.

We finally went over another milestone. Total hits are now over 20,000 and in such a short while. No local Web site can come even close to that and only two other blog sites can say that.

Not only that but the average hits per day have gone well over the magic number of 67 per day. That equals to 2000 hits per month. This is on very solid ground, My first requirement to keep a blog is 20 hits per day and if they cannot do that, I drop them.

Then I must work to get a blog over the next big hurdle which is 34 average hits per day and equals 1000 hits per month. Once there the blog will be cruising and I add all the things it needs. The most important is the Information Contributors.

With enough Information Contributors it can get to the next phase of 67 average hits per day and another plateau. Then the Contributing Editor is the one that will do the the trick. Anyone that can say a few things of interest for the dancers is welcomed by the readers. And they can open, write, post photos and close the blog on their own, anytime they wish.

Our best example is Calvin Ota on the Town Dancer blog. We can learn a lot from him. You can't do half as well? Neither can I but that is enough. Tim Cubero on this blog coming up very well, we can learn from him too. We have no experts on blogging, but we sure are learning. The dance information is the key.

This can run a blog to over 100 average hits per day (3000/month) and that is about all we can wish for. I don't really know but I would guess that the law of diminishing returns would kick in about that time.

This third edition of the Monday Platinum Horseshoe blog is fleshing out very nicely and the reader/dancers of our growing dance community are finding it a good guide to make choices.

Like what he has at the Elks but we need a little more room. This blog still remains everyone's chance to get your two cents in.

HBDA Kapolei Chapter

HBDA Kapolei chapter members continue to smile! That’s what we said when you visited our previous blog message to you. From these current pictures you see here, the only change in the images is that our smiles have gotten wider, especially from members of Kapolei’s waltz performance at the recent August 6th HBDA 52nd Anniversary Ball held at the Ala Wai Palladium in Waikiki.

With a packed house of well over 600 people of which 76 were ticket holders supporting Kapolei chapter and performers, this became a night worth preparing for, as we too were entertained by ten other HBDA chapters who performed not only from Oahu but from the Big Island as well! All this commanded the capacity of standing room only in Hawaii’s largest wooden dance floor.

Choreographed by Dance Director Benny Agbayani and Associate Dance Director Faith Agbayani, 13 couples from our more than 60 -member chapter performed the waltz from the song “True Love “ by Elton John. Most unique is the feat that we eventually were able to execute a dance routine at the bronze intermediate level with a sprinkling of gold steps!!! We surely surprised ourselves!

From Benny and Faith Agbayani, we have received the gift of knowing what we can do for ourselves to apply new skills and steps onto the regular social dance floor - way beyond the completion of our routine performance.

Many hours of multiple practices with Ben and Faith each week for the past two months in different locations available, together with the additional help from senior dance instructors Romeo and Elsa Navares, allowed us to accomplish what others would most doubtfully attempt. We thank Faith and Benny Agbayani for their elegant choreography, their belief, and confidence in us!

From their determination not to change the steps to make it easier for us to accomplish, we were able to learn much more than how to dance. Through their mentoring we learned much more that would not have been covered in a regular dance class. It’s been said and heard: You learn more how to dance from committing yourself to a dance routine! We learned how to more carefully listen, attentively watch, and carefully attempt many things new.

As members of a dance routine, we learned more about ourselves. We discovered how we can communicate better with our dance partner be it spouse or friend; what we are capable of doing that we never realized before; what we ought to try at the encouragement of Ben and Faith even though we thought we couldn’t do it.

Our dance instructors have kindly given us not only the gift of their skill but especially their own personal time; their gift of artistic choreography; and their gift of knowing what we can do for ourselves. We learned how to be independent: self-sufficient on the dance floor to maneuver and accommodate our movements in quick thinking, whether it be in a routine or in the casual experience of the social dance floor.

From Benny and Faith, they have given us the three S’s: Styling, Stepping, Showmanship and the three C's: Control, Concentration, Confidence. All this helped us to convey elegance and grace to artistically carry ourselves with our dance partner and to those watching.

We realized that we learned how to manage, how to accommodate, how to speak to our dance partner if something needed to be adjusted, and how to endure, to carry on. We learned how to communicate better to our partner and others to seek our dancing needs. What great social skills that we received from learning how to dance in a routine – skills that go well beyond the dance floor!

We have shaped social talents that can now be applied to a friendship, a marriage between husband and wife, a relationship with an employer and co-workers. Whoever thought that learning how to dance, especially learning how to perform in a routine, would ever give these fringe benefits!

Thank you as well to our fellow classmates, our chapter president Nora Dionisio, and our families and supporters all for the gift of camaraderie and bonding we have been able to build. All this goes beyond the measure of regular dance classes!

The New Wave, The Oldies but Goodies

Big Bands were existing in New Orleans since the early 1920s. Swing music became hugely popular and gained worldwide interest. The instantly recognizable and infectious sound of the swing rhythms sparked a craze for big band music that lives on to this very day.

Also known as swing jazz, there are many legendary band leaders who pioneered the astronomical rise of this distinctive jazz music. Benny "King of Swing" Goodman was one of the first of a new generation to bring this popular music of the 1930s to the fore. Famous for his spectacular introduction of it for dancing at the famous Palomar Ballroom in the 1930s.

With the outbreak of the Second World War, the demand for American Big Bands and Jazz Music reached new heights with halls and ballrooms attracting huge crowds. As such, there are many jazz music CDs available today from the likes of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Bob Crosby. This music has been duplicated, rearranged, improved, degraded and just changed throughout the years by many other bands.

As the hugely influential Duke Ellington’s lyrics say: “It don’t mean a thing if you ain’t got that swing!”

In Hawaii, markedly in this century there has been an increase in interest by listeners and dancers to the music of this period. The music from the 30s, 40s and dwindling out in the 70s. Admittedly, this has been some of the best music ever written on this planet both for hearing and for moving to it.

However, this new wave cannot last by itself. For the dancers in Hawaii, were changed with the introduction to Ballroom dancing in the late 50s. With it came the Latin music and the dance that goes with it. Rumba and Cha Cha Cha has become a staple in dancing in Hawaii and it has become part of Social Dance.

Unfortunately, many DJs, because they know so much about music will use non latin music for their dancing presentations. They know their rhythm and "You can dance Rumba to it" and we can all agree to that. However it is not the same thing when the DJ plays a real Latin sound and "You gotta dance Rumba." Many out there do not know the difference. It's not only in the rhythm, Dude, its in the MUSIC.

I asked one of the DJs, if it was ignorance or apathy. He replied, "I don't know and I don't care." Clear enough for me.
